SHMAAK - A Zef Magazine

The Brief
For this project, we were required to create a new bi- anual magazine that will launch on the market early in 2022. It should be a bi-annual (two a year) magazine that revolves around Design Trends. The magazine should be innovative and original and should be like nothing ever seen on the shelves of bookstores and supermarkets. Typography must be the main element used in the design’s visual language.

The Target
To catalyse support and loyalty from a niche alternative Afrikaans target audience by offering something that is unique and relevant to modern times. This is done to create a personal relationship by providing specific content in a more visual (typographic) and less text heavy way in order to appeal to the reading habits of a modern target audience.

The Plan
To persuade an alternative Afrikaans target audience, that by forming an alliance with the brand, they are a part of something bigger which challenges the norms and attitudes of the day by taking a stance against the traditional ways of doing things.

The Concept
to represent the evolved hybrid alternative afrikaans culture trend as a publication in a state of complete anarchy in which the articles and artists are also represented as hybrid entities that are on literal and figurative display a spectacle of sorts. These entities and articles are unashamed and have evolved past the traditional ways of being and doing things into a complete blend of past influences and futuristic styles. They aim to present the boldness of the Alternative Afrikaner while embodying a state of complete rebellion against tradition that is represented from the layouts to the language.
